Music Examinations
Phuket School of Music offers preparation for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Examinations— the UK’s largest music education body and the world’s leading provider of music assessments, with over 650,000 exams held annually in more than 90 countries.
Our experienced instructors guide students through every stage, from Prep Level to Professional Diploma examinations. To help students build confidence and develop stage presence, we regularly organize recital performances ahead of exam dates.

Exam Information
Practical Grades focus on all-round musical knowledge and skills, including performance. They are face-to-face exams and are available for the following levels and subjects:
Initial Grade: Piano and Bowed Strings only
Grades 1 to 8: a wide range of instruments, singing and Singing for Musical Theatre
Grades 1 to 5: jazz instruments (Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK only)
We also offer Practical Musicianship Grades that assess musical listening, reading and playing skills.
Performance Grades provide an alternative to Practical Grades, with a focus just on performance.
If you’re taking Practical Grade 6, 7 or 8 you must pass Grade 5 (or above) in Music Theory, Practical Musicianship or a Jazz Practical Grade before you book your exam
Performance Grades are digital exams that we assess from a video recording submitted by the candidate. They’re available for the following levels and subjects:
Initial Grade: Piano, Bowed Strings and Drum Kit
Grades 1 to 8: a range of instruments and singing, including Singing for Musical Theatre and Drum Kit
Grades 1 to 5: Jazz instruments
The exams are equivalent in demand and value to our Practical Grades – they provide an alternative assessment with a strong focus on performance, including communication, interpretation and delivery.
Performance Grades are available at a time to suit you – there are no booking periods or exam sessions so you can choose when to book, record and submit the exam. You can submit your video when you book or at any time during the next 28 days.
